The next few hours would melt into a single memory of numb despair. She was still kneeling beside the bed when her mother opened the door, but she heard Mother’s gasp as she dropped the firewood she held and rushed to the bed. A cry of anguish tore from Mother’s throat, rising in pitch to compete with the wind. She bent over her son’s body, racked with broken, desperate sobs. Then Sarah folded in upon herself and Mother held her, rocking her like a child. The world swam, every sound seemed far away, every hitching breath hurt her ribs. The creak of the door again, a thump, and the clatter of Father’s cane falling to the floor. He limped across the room and collapsed onto the bench, pressing his hand to the boy’s chest. Abigail pushed past him, prodding her brother and asking questions Sarah did not register. All she knew were the lurching motion of her mother’s chest, the pounding of her heart, and the distant, shattering knowledge that her brother was gone.
